Day 53, The Time Thief: A Tale of TikTok, Rehab, and Redemption

Last night, I slept pretty well despite doom scrolling TikTok shorts until midnight. What a colossal waste of time! Time I could have spent studying the AI courses I've been taking. The concept of time has been front and center for me lately. I'm not a young buck nor elderly and farting dust; let's just say I'm somewhere in between. 😅

I wasted 30+ years drinking, doing drugs, or a combination of both. That's a long time, yet not really. Time goes by so fast unless you're stuck behind bars, in which case it goes by soooo slow. My heart goes out to those of us incarcerated. I always tell others who will listen to my rants that I'd rather lose a dollar than a minute because I can always make a dollar, but I can never make up a minute lost—it's gone forever.

Being out there for 30+ years, I'm a little late to the game of life. Kudos to our afflicted young people who recognize early that alcoholism and drug abuse are a terrible waste of time. Go get detox if you need it and get into rehab. It was amazing how many young people under the age of 21 I saw in my two rehab stints. In this day and age, fentanyl and meth are destroying whole communities and so many of our young people—just horrible.

While in rehab, I was seen as a father figure to a couple of young people. My roommate Jack, 19 years old and in for fentanyl, loved having me as his roommate as I listened and talked to him. Jack said I was like a father to him, and that deeply touched my heart. Jack even introduced me to his family at the rehab center during Christmas family night with a beaming smile on his face. That was a special moment for both of us. Somewhere in my stuff I lugged home on that horrible Greyhound ride back, I have Jack's phone number. I better dig in and find that number and give him a call.

Anyway, that's enough of my rant. Until next time, stay sober and never lose hope.

Gabriel.
